Printhead Assemblies

Printhead assemblies in general consist of some or all of the following:

  • a fluid reservoir;
  • dispensing device;
  • fluid interconnections between the reservoirs and dispensing devices;
  • filter elements;
  • connections to the pneumatic controllerand inert gas source;
  • connections to the electronics controller;
  • heating elements and connections to temperature controllers;
  • and mechanical mounting.

All printhead assemblies listed below can be used on the jetlab® printing systems. Printhead subsystems can be integrated into custom printing or dispensing systems, as illustrated in the Subsystem Selection Guide.

PH-47

The PH-47 is a drop-on-demand printhead that operates at room temperature. It has a glass reservoir, PTFE tubing, and PEEK fittings to interconnect with the dispensing device. Fluid can be added to the reservoir without removing the printhead assembly, and unused fluid can be recovered, or stored in the glass reservoir. An optional stirring module is available, for use with suspensions, such as nano-metals, that may settle.

A broad range of materials can be dispensed using the PH-47, including bioactive, optically active, sensor, and other materials. Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL have been dispensed.

PH-41

The PH-41 is a cartridge style, low-temperature drop-on-demand printhead. It is designed for dispensing fluids at room temperature, or optionally up to 50°C. The reservoir attaches directly to the dispensing device, forming a replaceable assembly that allows quick change out and storage, permitting multiple fluids to be printed without having to clean or disassemble the printhead. An integrated filter enhances reliability.

A broad range of materials can be dispensed using the PH-41, including bioactive, optically active, sensor, and other materials. Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL have been dispensed.

PH-46

The PH-46 is a drop-on-demand printhead that contains four independent fluid reservoirs and dispensing devices. The mounting block for the dispensing devices optionally contains a heater and thermocouple, allowing the fluids to be dispensed at up to 50°C. The 2 mL (1.5 and 0.5 mL optional) polypropylene or 20 mL removable glass reservoirs can be capped and used to store fluids off-line, and unused fluid can be fully recovered. PEEK and PTFE fittings and tubing combine with the reservoir to make an inert fluid path.

A broad range of materials can be dispensed using the PH-46, including bioactive, optically active, sensor, and other materials. Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL have been dispensed.

PH-04a

The PH-04a Polymer Jet™ high-temperature, drop-on-demand printhead is designed for dispensing polymers and other materials at elevated temperature. Materials that must be heated above 50°C in order to melt and/or lower the viscosity of the fluid to less than 20cp can be dispensed using the PH-04a Polymer Jet™ printhead. Adhesives, optical polymers for light guides and lenses, and optically active materials have all been jetted successfully with the PH-04a.

Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL have been dispensed. The PH-04a uses the same interchangeable high temperature dispensing device, the MJ-SF, as does the PH-05a high temperature printhead with inert gas injection

PH-41HT

The PH-41HT is a cartridge style, high-temperature drop-on-demand printhead. It is designed for dispensing fluids from room temperature up to 150°C. The reservoir attaches directly to the dispensing device, forming a replaceable assembly that allows quick change out and storage, permitting multiple fluids to be printed without having to clean or disassemble the printhead. An integrated filter enhances reliability.

A broad range of materials can be dispensed using the PH-41HT, including organic hydrocarbons, optically active, sensor, and other materials. Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL can be dispensed.

PH-05a

The PH-05a drop-on-demand printhead is designed for dispensing oxygen and/or water sensitive materials at temperatures up to 240°C. Integrated heated inert gas injection is used to creating a local inert environment at the orifice of the dispensing device and around the drop in flight.

The PH-05a uses the same interchangeable high temperature dispensing device, the MJ-SF, as does the PH-04a Polymer Jet™ printhead. Drop volumes ranging from 5 pL to as high as 0.5 nL have been dispensed. Using MicroFab’s patented drive waveforms, the range of the drop volume obtainable without changing the dispensing device can be a factor 3 or better.
